Where to see England’s most breathtaking wisteria blooms

If you’re a lover of flowers, then you’ll know that wisteria blooms are truly something special. I personally, spend several weeks every year waiting for these purple beauties to start making their appearance. These cascading clusters of purple flowers create a magical atmosphere that feels straight out of a fairy tale. The UK is home to some absolutely gorgeous spots to admire wisteria flowers, from charming secret gardens to grand estates.

In this blog, I'll guide you through the best locations across the country to experience the enchanting allure of wisteria, ensuring your springtime adventures are nothing short of unforgettable!

When to go

In the UK, wisteria typically blooms from late April to early June, with the peak bloom often being during mid-May. The exact timing varies depending on the region and the weather conditions, so timings may change from year to year. Wisteria flowers last for around two to three weeks, so if you are planning to visit these locations to witness the wisteria, be sure to time your visit carefully. I tend to keep an eye on the Instagram pages of local gardens to ensure I time my visits well!

Iford Manor Gardens

Starting off with my absolute favourite... I discovered Iford Manor Gardens in 2023 and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a more magnificent wisteria display. These Grade 1 listed gardens boast a number of wisteria displays during the spring months, the first of which present themselves to you as soon as you arrive in the courtyard. As you continue around the gardens you will also discover enchanting displays at the Lily Pool, Casita and the Great Terrace. Iford Manor in spring is a must-visit for nature and garden lovers alike.

These gardens offer a tranquil, peaceful haven at the edge of the Cotswolds, just fifteen minutes from Bath. From my experience, I would suggest booking your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, as I have seen people being turned away during peak season. Also please note that their website states that children under the age of 10 are not permitted.

Tyntesfield (National Trust)

Tyntesfield is an ornate Victorian Gothic Revival house with beautiful, extensive gardens and wonderfully unique architecture set in the North of Somerset. The wisteria at Tyntesfield is a true highlight, especially when it blooms in the main courtyard. As spring unfolds, the vibrant purple and lilac flowers cascade gracefully over the grand architecture, creating a breathtaking display. The sweet fragrance fills the air, making it the perfect spot to pause and take in the beauty of nature.

Notting Hill

When you think of the best places to see floral displays in England, London is not likely to be top of your list. One year I happened to be visiting London during May and - as a lover of wisteria - thought it would be worth looking for some floral displays, so I did a bit of research. Unfortunately, we were a bit early for some of the flowers, like those in Kynance Mews, but were treated to a spectacular display at this house in Stafford Terrace. Something about the contrast of the white building and the purple flowers made this display truly exquisite.

Broadway (The Cotswolds)

The Cotswolds, with it’s honey-coloured stone buildings and tranquil gardens are spectacular all year round, but during the Spring, when the villages are draped in beautiful purple coloured flowers, there truly is nowhere I would rather be. My favourite village to photograph wisteria is Broadway, Worcestershire. A short wander around this lovely village, along with a coffee (or ice cream!) stop as you take in the sweet fragrance of the wisteria will never fail to brighten your day.
